New Features in the DE Improve the User Experience
Faster, easier ways to launch apps and manage your analyses and compute resources.
It’s Fall 2024—the season of giving is upon us! And come early December, CyVerse is giving users new features and changes that will improve their experience when launching and using both VICE and executable apps in the Discovery Environment (DE). Together, these enhancements help you launch analyses more quickly and better manage your subscription compute resources. “By making it easier to be a good steward of your own compute resources," said CyVerse PI Nirav Merchant, "CyVerse continues to make steps towards sustainability."
New Features
- You can now generate an HTML source for a badge in the DE to instantly launch an analysis with predefined parameters.
- When you use an analysis launch link for an instant launch, the DE will now launch the analysis immediately rather than display the analysis launch wizard.
- While an analysis is running, users will get periodic notifications to remind them that the analysis is running, helping to prevent users’ unintentional consumption of compute hours.
- For apps with multiple versions, anyone with permission to modify the app can change the order of the app versions to keep the most commonly used version at or near the top of the list.

Changed Features
- The options to terminate or extend the time limit of a job on the analysis summary page are now easy-to-see buttons if there is sufficient room on the display.
- The option to request help for an analysis is now in the ellipsis menu on the analysis summary page.
- The default setting for maximum CPUs requested when launching an app is now set to 4 CPUs to minimize the unintended or unnecessary use of compute hours.
- Implemented a bug fix for the system to correctly retrieve a user's current subscription and resources.
These changes will be deployed in CyVerse’s regularly scheduled Maintenance on December 3, 2024.
The Core Software team juggled these improvements with other competing "behind the scenes" priorities, such as the TAPIS v3 migration, migration to a newer version of Kubernetes, and several programming changes to make deployments easier.
